We were in a terminal, maybe an airport, but unlikely because we were at a non-chain convenience store inside a terminal. Maybe it was a pier or a jetty. Anyway, our trip was delayed and we were trying to resign ourselves to the long wait. I think for this trip we had company but so far, in the picture, there was only you and me. We were bantering on a bench/ledge/something we were sitting on, our bags at our feet. You were in good spirits, and I noticed with swelling joy that you sat close to me, even if the bench/ledge/something we were sitting on was long and spacious. We were shoulder-to-shoulder. You leaned as you animatedly talked and ribbed and joked. My shoulder bag was lodged between us and I carefully adjusted it so you could get closer. Later, after in the middle of a gradually descending lull, you yawned and said you were feeling sleepy. Matter-of-factly I pointed out that you could take a nap on the wide bench/ledge/something we were sitting on space. I patted my lap to signify that my thighs can double as pillows. You had a bright idea and spread out your sleeping bag on the floor and lay in it. Out of nowhere, the convenience store owner's toddler son dived in your bag too and you laughed and looked at me mischievously, as if telling me in on your plan, and you enveloped the little boy in your sleeping bag and roughhoused him to his delight. Minutes later, the boy's mother reprimanded him and scooped him out of your tangle while you and the little boy were still laughing.
I woke up smiling and it took me minutes to realize why. I had dreamt of you and it was a happy dream. But then I got sad. I miss you and your company. And then I got confused because our dynamic had never been like in the dream. The only accurate part of the dream was when you refused my thighs just as you refused so many things I had offered in real life: dinners, hugs, a shot at love.
